  • My before and after kitchen, Gutted the original low end builder's quality kitchen that the original owners did not renovate. Used brown lapis granite for the counters and yellow river granite for the island. 18" travertine tiles on the floor with a tiled medallion installed by the sink. Tumbled marble backsplash installed and pendant lighting installed. Small lights were used over the leg of the island which includes the stove so we didn't want hanging pendant lights in the way., Kitchens Design

  • This kitchen became the heart of the home, We relocated what was originally a small kitchen (located in the front of the house) to the rear of the house. Now it’s opened up to create a large space connecting the dining room and family room.We added heated floors when we put the tiles in because we’re on a slab foundation - it's been great so far (especially during the winter)., Kitchens Design

  • New Kitchen for 2009!, My recently remodeled kitchen. We took down a non-weight bearing wall and eliminated the dining room. The new kitchen stretches across the back of the house for a lot of badly needed space.

  • Houston Kitchen Redo Mitered Granite, Our kitchen makeover didn't involve changes to the basic arrangement but we did add some nice features.

The grainite countertop is Yellow River which is a pattern with a lot of movement. The edge is mitered to give the appearance of a 2.25 inch thickness. A mitered edge makes it look like the pattern flows over and onto the edge. You have to look for a fabricator who is able and willing to do a mitered edge. It was an additional $600 cost but we think well worth it.

The plywood back was removed from one upper set of cabinets and replaced with glass. The shelves in those cabinets were also replaced with glass.

The pantry was redesigned with custom swing-out units that utilize a piano hinge design. We love the pantry.

One issue was what to do with our large cookbook collection. There wasn't quite enough room for a large book case. The solution was to embed a custom built bookcase into a wall. The result is a large bookcase that only protrudes into the room by about 4 inches.

The sink is a Blanco multi-level with integrated drain board in the bisquit color. We love this sink. h, Kitchens Design

  • River Rock Shower Takes World's Smallest Master Bath From Blah To Spa, This tiny master bathroom (less than 36 s.f.) in a 1962 colonial ranch style home was considered luxurious with its turquoise high gloss tile and custom site built mahogany cabinets. But a shower pan leak led to an inspired makeover with a black river rock corner shower and dramatic glass sink to provide a lot of visual impact. The clean, simple lines and use of natural materials such as the travertine floor, and neutral background colors allow the feature elements to shine while staying within the owner's very tight budget., Bathrooms Design

  • Kitchen Update with Little but Creative Thriftiness, We inherited our home from my husband's grandparents. It was built in the 50's. Like most of us, the majority of my time is spent in the kitchen and I desire a few updates on little but my own creativity. Lookinging for a granite-like surface, I sanded the old formica top down, applied black semi-glass paint and sprinkled with concrete floor flakes. After drying, I applied 3 coats of polyurethene. The backsplash has been painted 3 times and now is red. Problem is, I'm stuck - I've thought of colors and backsplash ideas for 2 weeks and not making much headway. I layed new linoleum squares on the floor which are off-white and tan with a tan diamond in the middle of each square. Tile is not in the backsplash budget, but I have thought of linoleum squares, I just haven't found any that have much color. Hand painted design will work if I could decide on wall colors. The bottom of the walls are wood type, paintable surface and the upper half of the walls are wallpaper that has to go. I plan to make a design on the wall over the range made of 2 x 2 tiles I picke up at a surplus store. There are 6 sets of different colored tiles with 4 tiles in each set with varying colors of blue, black, gray, tan, dark red and brown., Kitchens Design
