  • Asymmetrical Kitchen Remodel, Before moving into this newly purchased home, the owners had an opportunity to remodel the kitchen. Built in 1990, this kitchen was compartmentalized and outdated. The island was too small and a bottleneck formed between the island and refrigerator. The owners wanted to open up the space to the living and dining areas.

Inspired by Mexican contemporary architecture, the kitchen was transformed. The tile backsplash, dark counters and small island were all removed. The florescent light box was swapped with cool pendants and recessed lighting. A new kitchen sink is now located under a new picture box window allowing views to the street. Overhead cabinets in a bright, fun hue and open wood shelving with accent lighting and decorative tile bring functionality to the space. The cooktop remains in the enlarged, asymmetrical island and now accommodates seating. Some appliances were updated and a new pantry with additional storage was constructed around the refrigerator. Finishing the look is new Brazilian Pecan hardwood flooring.

Now this family has an updated, contemporary kitchen that is open to the living spaces and can freely enjoy hosting friends and family.

  • Greetings from the Refrigerator, All visitors are greeted by the refrigerator, right next to our front door! The kitchen is pre-fab bland 90s, except the appliances which look like from the 50s. It takes an hour to boil a pot of water on the stove. The dishwasher is so loud, our neighbors can hear it. The kitchen is on the same floor as our living/dining room, as it is all one room, but the kitchen cabinets are not a nice view from our couch. However, the view outside and floors are gorgeous, and we want the inside to complement it. We don't like having things on the counters, but because of lack of space, we have no choice. We would like something seamless and modern instead., Kitchens Design

  • wooden suffocation!!, We are bears hiding in our wooden den. We don't know how to make it flow with the rest of the house with all the wall pannelling and parkae flooring. We are in a den when we light our wood burning fireplace because there is little natural light coming into this room and the light from the fire bounces and reflects off the walls. We need help desperately to know where to begin, how to make the flooring in our rooms come together, where to start and stop the panneling etc is painting this much panneling through the rooms like trying to cover a bad zit with makeup? It;s still there just a different color? please help!!, Living Rooms Design

  • Cramped & Crying, Small (11' x 13') TV room, sitting room, den - not sure what to call it. A lot of light due to french doors and 3 windows. French doors have 2" wooden blinds while the windows have plantation shutters. This is the room where my husband and I sit, watch TV, read, etc. My furniture won't fit! I need ideas as to how to arrange current furniture or suggestions for different furnishings. Must be comfortable and grandchildren safe., Other Spaces Design

  • My Kitchen is in the BASEMENT, My circa 1700 home (bought 7/1/08) - once used in the underground railroad. Can't figure out how to make it work for me and my 69 year old Mom. Cashed in retirement to buy a home where I could be w/Mom & run a B&B business but this kitchen is not functional. The clutter on the table is a result of my efforts today. I would NEVER leave my kitchen this way when guests arrive! , Kitchens Design

  • Drab to Fab Kitchen Make-over, Our kitchen is small to begin with so the dark farm-style decor that came with the house just wouldn't do. By re-purposing what we could, adding a little paint, new counter tops, and a whole lot of energy, we ended up with something much more "us.", Kitchens Design

  • Super Quick Cottage Facelift into this Century!, 1940's kitchen in my cottage style home that got a quick (temporary) makeover by painting the original steel cabinets and retaining the vintage appeal by keeping the hardware, warming up the countertops with butcher block , subway tile back splash and new stainless appliances and a commercial refrigerator for a totally new look! The future plan is to remove a wall and open the kitchen up to the sunroom so this whole project was done for around $600 in order to keep expenses to a minimum as we have been redoing the entire house and the bathrooms were the top priority!
