  • HELP! Can Cottage Style Work?, This photo is my house without all the plants that now cover a good deal of it. The rusted aluminum awning was replaced with a canvas dome awning & it's shredded from the heavy winds we get & it's 19 yrs. old. The stone veneer is horrible & I'm considering painting it. My husband & I would love to be able to sit on a front porch & chat with all the people that use our area for walking their dogs. Is it possible to achieve a cozy cottage style by adding a covered porch which would break the monotony of the "no style" 2-story? I absolutely fell in love with CottageConvert's "Cozy Cottage" craftsman home under Home Exteriors & would love to replicate the look using the same colors she used. I'd appreciate any suggestions., Porches Design

  • Fine Lake home "not" so fine! We need HELP with color., Our house needs a new look! What color should we paint the window trim, the decking, and handrail. The house needs some character with landscaping as well. Also looking for advise on decorating the deck with outdoor patio lights and furniture, ect. We feel that the house is too bland and it needs some character. We live in a house that is 1,600 sq. ft. on the main level, and 1,200 sq. ft. on the lower level. It has a light grey vinyl shake siding called "weathered white". The windows are trimmed out in cedar painted white. It has double hung white windows, and two white french doors facing the lake. The lakeside is considered the front. There is a front deck that wraps around to the back of the home and it is a grey Trex maintenance-free decking. The deck railing is cedar painted white with aluminum spindals. The gutter is 6 in., 1/2 round, galvalium. There is a detached garage with the same siding, trim, and gutter. There is no lanscaping to speak of. We are desparately needing advise on how to create a shabby chic look, that is fun, and inviting, but yet elegant. , Home Exterior Design

  • HELP! No covered porch or Foyer & Problems, We bought our house in 1990 & made the most important repairs at that time. The house is over 70 yrs. old & sits on a corner lot. Currently, everything is falling apart: siding has holes, veneer is loose, canvas awning is shredding, windows are wood & need refurbished, steps are crumbling & the brick slabs I put down on top of the old concrete stoop are now cracking also. When entering from the front door, I have almost 3 ft. of ceramic tile for people to enter & then the stairway almost hits them in the face. My overgrown plants are another issue & the white pine is going to be cut down hopefully in a few days. I need help "Big Time." Problem: very little money or the skills to do it myself. :(, Home Exterior Design

  • Big changes little dollars, Exterior of my first " Go Green " renovation. Craig's List, Ebay, Habitat for Humanities are a few of the places I purchased items from. The goal was to re-use building products and keep our costs low by searching and bartering through local souces. This is an investment rental property, purchased at the right price due to lack of care & maintenance. By finding those special deals we received quality items and cut our renovation costs by almost half. You might want to keep in mind, that I worked the site during the day and surfed Craig's list and watched TV at night. I spent quite a bit of time surfing and chasing after these items across two states, but ultimately I saved a lot. Thank You for taking the time to look at my projects., Home Exterior Design

  • 1860's Remodel Timber Frame Home, Take a an old 1860's home and update for today's living.
Our wish list was to add a deck, modern kitchen, breakfast nook, new powder room, master bath, and two bedrooms in the attic. Along the way, we reopened the fireplace in the dining room, added central air, and modernize the systems. Oh, tried saving the old horse hair plaster walls with new electical wires being run from the outside of the home. Our young electrican loved hanging off a ladder doing that (not). We started by gutting the kitchen and adjoining dining room wall to see what was up. The third floor attic became the master bedroom, sitting room with a gas fireplace & full bathroom with a corner shower. My son liked the house so much after we finished it, he & his wife purchased it from us., Home Exterior Design
