  • Puppy Play area NEEDS advice and help, This is the backyard dedicated to our puppers. We bought lattice to put around the bottom of the deck so the dogs could not go under..did not put it up yet ..hope someone has a better idea. Cairn terriers are notorious for digging and we felt they would be able to get under there with the lattice. We foster home for Cairn Terrier Rescue USA, so we are always getting new dogs that sometimes have never seen the grass so we made a concrete path way out into the yard. I would like to have better shade other than the current umbrella it gets really hot in the summer and the wooden deck burns their little paws ( not to mention mine!) Some kind of landscaping ideas that are doggie friendly. Currently we only have 4 dogs 2 cairns and 2 Shitzus the little ones don't like to get their feet wet . All IDEAS welcomed !, Yards Design

  • Beachy Modern Living Room , I've been moving things around here quite a bit lately:) I finally found the perfect spot for our tiki-hut - it as a little bit too big for the entrance and wasn't very functional there. We have a lot of people over, so it's perfect to keep the glass water container on it all the time now. We also got new ceiling fans - it's very hot here in Hawaii, and I wanted the fans to look more tropical so I got the woven leaf look. We added more seating and changed a few more things around:), Living Rooms Design

  • Single Room Cabin, 448 sq.ft.

Originally, our little cabin had no water, no plumbing, no septic, no kitchen, and no bathroom.

My wife was a total trooper and decided it would be fun to 'camp' at our cabin and make it livable as we went.

With some expert advice, I plumbed the cabin, installed the bathroom with a bath/shower combo, with the help of a local geologist we designed a constructed wetlands septic system which eventually was permitted by the county, so I installed the minimum requirements to get it passed by the county so we could use the facilities I had installed.

We found some cheap reclaimed kitchen cabinets on craigslist and installed as many pieces as possible to increase the virtually non-existent storage space. In fact, everything in the kitchen was found on craigslistL: the refridgerator, the dishwasher, the 1950's oven, the front-loading washing machine and the cabinets (as was almost every other fixture and piece of furniture in the cabin, some of which was even free!)

Because we have virtually no space to play with, we have opted to keep the cabin as open-plan as possible, but this has had a direct impact on storage and layout.

The bed is in the middle of one wall with the couch backing onto it creating a separate space. The wardrobe is open to the cabin, so we have all our clothes on display.

Having brought many of our furnishings from Scotland, we've tried to incorporate as many of these items into the design, but most of them are either still outside in our shed or just thrown around the cabin to remind us of our roomier times!

Trying to keep as green as possible, we have chosen to use second-hand, used, recycled and reclaimed materials whenever and wherever possible. Along the same lines, I designed, built and installed a batch-tank solar water heater on our roof, so now we have 'free' hot water 70% of the year! (And we have this crazy looking glass box on our roof for the neighbors to enjoy.)

Though we've been camping for months on end, we've been enjoying our new life so much, we finally got pregnant! The only catch with this is... where is all the baby stuff going to go?! , Other Spaces Design

  • A little bit of Italy in the kitchen, Before you say anything.... A "'Little bit"" of Italy it is not the same as "Italian". If I wanted to achieve the true Italian look I would have to make a different selection in furniture light fixtures fabrics etc. etc. My preference though is not to stick to a theme very seriously. Why? Because to a budget conscientious person like me it is easier to renew styles changing a few pieces here and there than having to buy everything new to redecorate. Hope you like it! . , Kitchens Design
