  • Kitchen Renovation: Old School 70s to Modern Austin, Texas Metro, This is a townhome I purchased in 2008 in Austin, Texas. The goal was to modernize the kitchen.

This was an exhaustive, year long process. The biggest challenge was completing a project and seeing that every improvement made it apparent that once we finished one project we had to keep going to modernize it and everything out of date stuck out like a sore thumb.

Here's what I we did:

1. Removed old rectangular florescent lighting - installed six florescent spots
2. Cut out the bar counter-top and replaced with granite tile
3. Cut out a section of the wall and made it more breathable and open
4. Did not come with an exhaust vent - installed a GE Monogram Exhaust Vent
5. Removed pantry to make an island kitchen counter top
6. installed new ceiling and orange peel texture
7. painted ugly green 70s cabinets and counter to white
8. Installed new trim and molding around entry way
9. Installed hardwoods where pantry was located
10 Installed birch paneling around range counter

Except for a few contractors, my friend Robert Juler helped with with all projects. Thanks Robert!

I hope you like it., Kitchens Design

I hope everyone takes a look cause i do value the imput. We repainted the inside of our home last week. This is still a work in progress. I am looking to find a few accent things with red tones to add some color and accesorize. Yellow was my least favorite color but i love it now. I wanted a cheery kitchen. , Kitchens Design

  • A "NOT" kitchen with 80's pink tile floor & orange oak cabinets, The space is sunny and large with a bayed breakfast area and nice Southern exposure...but it needs to be opened to the DR or LR to loose the soffits & 80's finishes and to add lighting (only 1 center fixture). The rest of the townhome is contemporary and in an urban area so this space is sooo "ready" for a facelift!, Kitchens Design

  • Painting Oak Cabinets - need help with color, This is our kitchen today - our cabinets are in great condition so I can't justify replacing them at this time. Ok I am going to take the plunge and paint my oak cabinets. I was going with white but not sure what color white, has anyone found a good Fine Paints of Europe paint color or Farrows & Ball color or Benjamin Moore color? I thought I might paint the wall of cabinets (floor to ceiling) a green color-what would be a good color? Also need a new wall color and should I paint the trim to match the cabinets or go with "linen white" which is the color of the painted trim in my house? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated., Kitchens Design

  • Small Kitchen Facelift needs help with backsplash, This is the BEFORE picture of my small kitchen redo. I had the 1980's light oak cabinets painted and "distressed" plus glass in 3 doors. Also had the fluorescent tube lights removed and can lights added. The kitchen feels 1/3 larger now!! Added a nice pot rack. Now need to add new counter tops and a backsplash. Counters will be replaced with dark silestone or composite. Any suggestions for the backsplash - please note dark vinyl floor which I love. See "after" pictures. Thank you., Kitchens Design

  • 80s Kitchen - Yuck!, We have a tiny outdated 80s kitchen with oak cabinets formica counter and almond colored tile with brown grout. Gross! We recently painted the dining/kitchen walls a happy orange which we LOVE but it doesn't spruce it up enough for me. How can we fix it up on a tiny budget? Our dining area looks sorta 1950s with a chrome dinette with colorful tuck and roll chairs. We got the dinette set used at a garage sale. It goes perfect with the orange!!! , Kitchens Design

  • Alice Brady's Dream Kitchen, My 1970s kitchen has loads of character... but not exactly the kind I had in mind. From the candy-coated cork board cabinets with orange stripes to the matching orange formica counter-tops I am in orange over-load land. The darkly colored and oddly shaped tiles don't exactly help! The worst part about it is the functionality of having the refrigerator so far away from the sink and cook top. The kitchen is so big but the layout makes a lot of the space wasted. The one thing that looks kind of nice is the brick overlay around the chimney... however I would be just as happy with it gone too., Kitchens Design

  • Our Kitchen Needs Help, My wife and I have purchased our home from my parents and have been slowly remodeling our house. The only thing we have left of it is our kitchen. It’s Retro, doesn’t everyone love retro? We have redone our son’s nursery, it had brown shag. Our living room had red shag. We still have our blue shag though. The Kitchen though has got to go. Everything is Orange. Yeah when it was done that was the in thing but in these days not so much. Small kitchen and very limited counter space along with the storage area makes it hard. The oven is starting to go out now also. We need help with our kitchen. Thanks Rate My Space Crew, Kitchens Design
