We just bought our very first home a month ago! It is a 1931 cottage style 1.5 story house, relatively small... but for two 22 year olds - I'd say it's perfect. Due to the size of the house, we are doing all we can to make it feel bigger. We painted the kitchen, took off some doors and put up wallpaper. We had almost no budget - so what you see here was done on about $120.00 - $140.00 in materials.

Painted the cabinets myself & got new appliances.
I used Glidden Gripper Primer.I cannot remember the color name but it was a Ralph Lauren color that I had Home Depot color match w/Behr semi-gloss paint.

When I bought this house it most certainly was not for the kitchen. I loved the space but pretty much hated everything else about it. With some hard work, a few gallons of paint, new hardware and a little bit of bravery I am proud to call this kitchen mine.

Here are a few photos of my "design on a dime" kitchen makeover. It's a work in progress. I hated my builder-grade, orange oak cabinets from the 1990s, so I painted over them, and added some Ikea handles. I plan to change the backsplash to something more modern soon, and tweak things here and there. It would be nice to have some under-cabinet lighting. This entire "reno" cost a few hundred dollars. It's definitely worth it if you want to give your oak kitchen an easy update.

Whenever I would tear kitchen pictures out of a magazine the cabinets would be white. We redid this kitchen for a fraction of what it could have cost to get my dream kitchen. The cabinets are oak and were professionally painted and glazed..for 1/5 the cost of replacing them. All appliances replaced added the backsplash and the fabric for the window treatments topped off my new kitchen...literally! The last picture is the "before".

I painted my oak kitchen cabinets with fresh white paint, added a tile back splash, granite counter tops and a warm wall color. My kitchen cabinets look fresh and new!

While looking at spaces, I came across alletasdesign, who recently painted and glazed her cabinets. I've been wanting to do this for a couple of years and just didn't have the guts until I saw hers. My cabinets are nice oak cabinets but they are 20 years old and I can't afford a new kitchen so I decided toI paint my cabinets too. I put in new formica countertops (can't afford others and installed a travertine backsplash. The backsplash didn't come back to it's natural color which is a little disappointing but I'll have to live with it. I also painted my barstools because the oak color just didn't match. They are a little light in the picture because of the flash. I added a few minor updates to the cabinets, added some posts to the island, purchased hardware on the internet, purchased a new cooktop and voila, I have a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost.

Purple and green are my signature colors so I painted my kitchen cabinets with these colors! The tops are pearlized sea foam green and the bottoms are metallic plum. Granite with "hidden" plum and irridescent backsplash tie everything together.

We had old "apartment like" cabinets in our home. They were terrible. So I figured I might as well paint them-and thank god I did. The backsplash was also this green diagonal nightmare,so I painted it- and wow the difference. What do you think?

Recently renovated dream kitchen with open shelving, a combination of painted and cherry cabinets, long dark granite countertops, and a modern marble tile backsplash. The kitchen is filled with light from french doors, windows and lots of modern LED lighting under shelves and cabinets. Floors are hard wood in this open chefs kitchen with pops of mid-century modern in the pendant light and a 1940's George Nelso Bubble lamp. The cabinets and counter tops are 30" deep and everything is designed for space, logical storage and easy cooking. The cooktop is induction, the sink is deep and wide and there is a view on every wall.

I love my kitchen! The reno began with a notion to move the island to improve the flow, creating an ‘eat-in’ kitchen with a new farm table. We ended up doing a full renovation. We did the work ourselves other than installing the granite. Our new kitchen makes me want to cook more and try out new recipes!

The old kitchen was so blah. The space didn't flow well or have any character. We built a new island out of old doors and painted it to match. The total money invested is under $500. I am trying to maintain a rustic charm.

This kitchen slowly evolved from a dark, banged up mess to updated, but still too dark and finally light and much brighter cleaner feel. The before pictures are mid-way. We do not have any before pictures of the kitchen when it was still very banged up with kitchen carpet on the floors and cabinet doors that had seen much better days.
