My Christmas 2011 Christmas mantel is a bit of a departure for me. I typically decorate for the season with lots of sparkle and bling. But this year I was craving a simpler, more traditional look. I used greenery, giant pine cones in glass urns, a reclaimed wood mirror, red berries in a turquoise 'vintage' tin jug, and a few ornaments in red and turquoise. The 'Happy Holidays' burlap-look ribbon came from Michael's, but reminded me of the Pottery Barn paper garland that I love so much. I am happy with the rustic, cottage style look. Visit me at my blog, apopofpretty.com, for other Christmas decorating ideas throughout the season.

I'm a believer in renew reuse recycle and have taken that into all my spaces at home. If I can refurbish repaint repurpose a previously purchased item I do it. These are just examples of items I've "renewed."

To keep the cost down I constructed this Three Post Pergola over our Spa Tub on an angular design utilizing non-redwood (economy lumber but covered all with Weather-proof Redwood Stain. Cost: less than $200.

Our dining room is one of the first spaces you see when you open the front door. Part of an open floor plan that has a combined entry, formal living area and dining room, we made what some may view as an odd choice to close off an archway into the kitchen on the left side of the rear wall. We chose to do so for space planning and traffic flow purposes. The room itself is on the small side - really only 10 x 10 within the columns and can't comfortably accommodate an antique buffet or hutch as I hoped. So we wanted people to feel like they could walk around and sit within the entire space and not feel like they were in the line of traffic flow. We used mirrors (Ballard Designs and preserved boxwood topiaries (Mills Floral to decorate and reflect light. Our chandelier was a $100 antique mall find that just needed a coat of white paint. The table was a steal of craig's list at just $150. It needed to be stripped and re-finished but it was well worth it! You can see a peek of our kitchen nook (part of another open concept kitchen and family room area and a pair of french doors to the central courtyard. We find this space with our slip covered chairs (which my mom covered and antique flea market pieces highly functional and versatile for evenings in with friends no matter the season. Nothing is too precious to use; with washable linen and a waxed table top, I no longer find myself a slave to furniture polish or the dry cleaners!

My gardening style is quite relaxed. I have objects of all sorts and sizes in my garden. Some are meant for the garden and some have been repurposed. Tasteful placement of various and interesting objects is an important element in my gardens. Objects can be used as focal points or as semi-hidden surprises as you stroll around your yard.
The progress of our outdoor deck and kitchen that my husband (over three years has been working on...there's still a little more left. The first phase was the deck, which took over a year. The second phase, was the outdoor fireplace and kitchen, which took about a year and a half - doing this in his free time and some weekends. The last phase will eventually be a roof of some sort...as it is very hot on the deck in our Southern California climate!

It has been a few years since I have posted any pix of the interior decorations here at our log home deep in the secluded woods in the North Georgia Mountains. Thought I should get "unlazy" and post a few.

My client-friend wanted a bedroom that was romantic, stylish, "pulled-together", and had a "far away" feel. I worked like crazy for 4 days while she and her husband were away on vacation. I took my color inspiration from the hawaiian barkcloth fabric I purchased from Hawaii for the window treatments... Most of the larger furniture (although I removed 3-4 pieces and bedding needed to stay - so I used color, some smaller pieces of furniture, accessories and art to create the space and feeling she wanted. A flokati rug anchored the seating area by the pool window. I built a wood frame and created a valance for the sliders. I did alot of editing of existing "stuff" in the room and pared it down with all new art and accessories. I painted an accent wall in "bordeux" and glazed the architectural detail to create visual impact. I changed the pillows on the bed which gave the focal point some pizazz! I created a headboard with an iron art piece and carved wooden art plaques. I bought new lighting for each end table as well as romantic lighting for sitting area and chest. I was relieved after the "reveal" as she and her husband were estatic!

Sheers on the porch sway in the breezes...they give the porch a romantic up-in-the-clouds feeling. Swing chains are covered with fabric cord covers and an old hutch was painted for china storage. The porch was pre-wired for music and I would love for you to visit my blog where you can hear what's usually playing out on the porch: http://betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com/. Thanks so much for stopping by my RMS friends...please have a glass of iced tea and a cookie before you leave. :-
