After living with a tired kitchen (linoleum tiles, Formica and wall paper on horsehair for 15 years, we decided to modernize our kitchen. Having closed my business, and finding myself with free time ... it was now or never. The scope of the project was a complete gut including removal of 2 walls (including structural beam work on the exterior wall to open up the kitchen to an existing enclosed sun porch. Probably the biggest challenge was designing the space to have a modern open feel while still maximizing storage and counter space. In this arena, incorporating a full size refrigerator (36" x 36" footprint x 70" tall into an already small space (10' x 11' was root to numerous heated conversations. My wife wanted to keep our large refrigeratorâs space, and I wanted a new counter depth fridge that would not overwhelm the space and make the room have a lighter feel. After building a cardboard mockup of the cabinetry (see pictures we settled on using the old monster but removed the over-the-fridge cabinet to reduce the disproportionally out of scale proportions. The mockup was the best tool to solve this dilemma since my wife had a hard time visualizing this design even after showing her a 3D computer rendition (Google Sketchup. Another challenge we faced was finding affordable modern style kitchen cabinetry not made out of pressboard (such as Ikea. After lots of searching we settled on custom-built cabinetry that due to its simple line frameless design was comparable in pricing to Kraftmaid. I had a cabinet-maker spray conversion varnish since the lacquer test piece was not durable enough to our nail scratch test even after 10 days of curing. Custom cabinetry sizes also allowed us to fully utilize the space and preserve the modern clean line. Incorporating a vent hood was also a priority. Not having one for 15 years meant we never cooked fish inside and had a stool handy to pull the fire alarm off the ceiling whenever we pan fried meals. As a result we relocated the stove and fridge across from each other and used the new beam detail to create a soffit to house an 800 cfm island hood. The island hood was customized to vent through the soffit and was a key design feature to allow sunlight in and unobstructed views of the back yard. I used brushed stainless and glass doors in the upper cabinets to reduce the amount of high gloss gray of the cabinetry. Although the original plan was to use frosted glass as the insert, my wife disliked the idea of seeing through glass the colorful cereal boxes and crammed mess. So I used white back painted glass that gives it a similar look without exposing what brand of pasta we buy. To complete the contemporary look, I used stainless baseboards, maple hardwood floors, and white quartz countertops with a waterfall detail. However, I still needed an accent color/feature to make the design pop. I struggled between using a bright backsplash or a bright wall color in selected accent walls; and finally settled on lime green accent walls versus a rust orange glass tile backsplash.

A dark espresso stain was used on our cabinets and was paired with a lighter floor. We loved the long, skinny quartz back splash and wanted that to pop so we used a simple counter top so it wouldn't overpower the room.

This master bath is better now, although it is smaller in size. The original shower pan was compromised and leaking, as if I needed another reason to remodel this bath. I put in a water and mold proof shower system, complete with waterproof membrane, drain and a tile ready shower pan (no concrete pouring was needed for the pan . Instillation of the shower system was very easy. Pouring a concrete pan was not on my top 10 need to do learn how to do list. The original bath had one sink and a small cabinet for storage that did not hold much, so I took the cabinet out. I added a pocket door instead to eliminate the door swing into the bath since the space is long and more narrow. I vented this bath, added recessed lighting, and added floating mirrors that project from the wall.

The whole concept was to have a modern but wheelchair accessible universal design kitchen. My husband uses a wheelchair but we wanted to design a space that invisibly incorporated features that would make the space more functional for him while maintaining the overall design we both envisioned.

We renovated our kitchen and just love how it turned out. It was ALOT of work (we did everything ourselves except the countertops. Light blue wall color, neutral quartz countertops, mocha glaze cabinets with undercounter lights, mosaic glass tile backsplash, new custom built in window seat with dark mocha dining table and 2 leather chairs. We already had a black fridge and dishwasher and it wasn't in our budget to upgrade everything to stainless appliances but in the future we would like to do that.

Our choice was do it up or list it and move. We went for the former, removing two walls, eliminating an unused formal living room, to create a HUGE, open, inviting kitchen/dining/breakfast/family space united by solid oak flooring throughout. Cherry cabinets, quartz counters, travertine backsplash, 5'x9' island, induction cooktop and more!
Regarding the darkness....the pics were taken at night. During the day it is bathed in light from the window over the sink, 2 bays and one bow window in adjacent rooms.

I have recycled my kitchen cabinets from the outdated 80's orange oak, to a more updated modern brown/black, shaker style. I am proud to say that I did the entire reno myself which included everything from electrical to carpentry, on a very tight budget. It took me a little better than a year, but it was done solo. (Girls rule : !!! I realize that it is not perfect, but I am very happy with the modern changes. Now I would like some honest opinions. The finishing touches are yet to be done, so bare with me. As you will see I am in the throws of adding hits of jalapeno green. Any and all ideas are welcome. :

This is our new kitchen. We wanted contemporary clean lines and a kitchen opening up to the great (living room. We used two tones -- light/honey natural color with expresso outlining. We used riverview bordeax granite, commercial appliances. We wanted a large wine cooler and a wet bar for entertaining. We added the bar stools in later. We used a zero radius double stainless steel sink. African Teak floors. We decided to double stack cabinets and put glass in the doors with lights. We added an icemaker.

Before the kitchen was closed off from the living room. I decided to tear down the wall to have that open floor plan that most buyers are looking for. I built all the maple cabinets myself in the garage. The slate backsplash was originally 16 inch square tiles that I cut into 2 inch strips with a commerial wet saw. I then staggered each row but not like a brick wall. Each row is offset a different length than the row above and below. The whole house now seems to revolve around the kitchen.
