  • Lake House Living Room, This is our newest project, little by little we are finishing off what we envisioned. The living room in the lake house needed to be relaxing, inviting, warm and modern at the same time so we mixed a few elements (like wall color, clean line sofa and rustic wood stove) to achieve a sophisticated and inviting look for our space. , Living Rooms Design

  • Cottage kitchen makeover on a budget...goodbye 1970s melamine, hello gorgeous!, This is a 1930s cottage vacation rental we own in Sandpoint Idaho. Over the last 5 years we have worked to get the 70's out and bring real cottage style in. Since we are on a tight budget, everything we do has to be DIY or negotiated to the lowest possible price; classic champagne taste on a beer budget!
We live in Northern California and this house is in Northern Idaho. We scheduled a 2 week vacation planned the kitchen makeover and loaded our Honda Pilot to the brim with tools. We drove the 16 hour drive and started what we thought was going to be a 1 week project with one week leftover to enjoy the remodel, (and our vacation) of course the project ended up taking the full 2 weeks of 16 hour days.
We wanted the kitchen cabinets to have an authentic look like they have been painted over again and again, so even if we could afford it, new cabinets would have ruined the cottage feel.
The existing cabinets were melamine with oak trim on top and bottom. For the cabinets we added molding around the outside and bead board on the inside and painted the white. At the last minute, I said to DH, "Wouldn't it be nice to have that old fashion glass on one of the upper cabinets?" Dear Husband loves to please so he figured out how to do it so if the glass breaks we could easily replace it. Adding glass added an extra day and a half to the project but it was so worth it!
Because this is a vacation rental we wanted flooring that was durable, fun, and something that people would not likely have in their own homes. I think we found that in the black and white checkerboard VCT. This is typically found in commercial uses, grocery stores etc. It was very economical and I like that it can be shined up. (I like shinny surfaces for kitchens, it gives them a clean feel.) We found an installer on Craigslist.
The counter is local granite mined out of Dover Bay about 2 miles from the house. We choose a white subway tile (classic cottage) but added a little fun with the black tiles here and there.
