Living room in South Florida. Mexican tile vaulted ceilings. Large window at front lots of natural light. Built in 1937. Our tastes tend toward the Indian / Indonesian / Moroccan / Turkish. Large Chinese shutters on wall. (Helped dwarf other half's HUGE speakers! A MUST. We both grew up having a living room no one EVER lived in or even visited. Not here. This one suits perfectly. And we actually used it. Imagine that. Ideally suited for South Florida. Comfortable & welcoming.

Welcome to our new home...The iron bench featured out front is my pride and joy...a goodbye gift from friends at my former job. I recently added a trellis and a small lilac right by my front door... We are just enjoying the upcoming fall foliage cool crisp nights and the 14 wild turkeys that visit us every morning!

It's taken almost a year but the living room makeover I started last spring is finally done!! I originally planned a more modern funky room -- cobalt blue walls with bright green accents. But as you can see that plan got modified big-time!!We added the wainscoting and the chandelier. The rest of the bones of the room are what we started with. And we re-covered the bench with a zebra print chenille.

Elegent baby boy nursery with a whimsical Victorian touch. I wanted some trains but I didn't want to dedicate the room to them. I also wanted the room to flow with our Victorian era Colonial Revival with Queen Anne influenced interior. I also wanted to draw attention to the beautiful woodwork and hardwood floors. Special touches to the room include the Harlequin pattern I handpainted on the walls the railroad track picture rail the custom fabrics and the revamped/painted fireplace.

Country French plus a touch of cottage with a palette of green red and yellow . An open floor plan with a sunny feeling, which is great in the gray Pacific Northwest. Per request the paint color is called Harvest moon, color #1366 by Sherwin-Williams. This color I guess has been revised so here is the formula on the paint can. The base color is A88W51 extra white. Using Colorant #32 Y1 Yellow 1 part and Y3 Deep Gold 34 parts.Using colorant # 128 Y1 yellow 1 part..I hope this helps. Sherwin-Williams should be able to find this color. Thank you all for you kind comments, I am truly flattered

THIS IS PART II FROM MY "FIRST TIME DESIGN" POST: My friend had requested a clean space to come home to - so I suggested a hotel look. Maintained was the existing wall color, sofa & ceiling light fixtures. Anything else could be changed. Without even realizing it - many of the prints I selected are similar to her wardrobe. She LOVES seashells, the ocean and flowers - but I didn't want to make the space 'themed' in it. Her fave store is Bombay Company - so three existing tables have been used and are being updated. The P1 pedestal dining table was the 1st new addition to the space. Window panels & hardware were delayed from being on backorder.
This is called "thrifted" becuase I did some thrift shopping for tables to save expenses on the budget. I sanded and refinished: a $5 side table, a $35 side table, a $50 coffee table and an round coffee table [at only $40] but that part of the space is still in progress [I'm refinishing another thrifted piece for it - a $30 buffet for storage]. Sorry if some of the pics are a little dark - they were shot at night with my camera phone.
Thanks for taking the time to view this space. You can read more about the design process and refinishing the furniture on my blog at http://nyclq-focalpoint.blogspot.com

Ok, so this room has been 5 different colors since we moved in 6 months ago. I just couldn't seem to get it right: too bland...then too bright...then too depressing....
You get the idea. Anyway, I finally settled on something "just right." It's the same color I used in my great room at the last house I owned. "Buckskin Pony" by Valspar Signature (Lowe's.
Originally the fireplace had a large framed opening for an old-style TV. None of ours fit, so we framed it up, and patched the sheetrock so that we could hang a tv in front. The living room is open to the kitchen, seperated by an awesome expanse of open counter. The kitchen is small, and lacked storage area, so we decided to frame up a wall and enclose the breakfast area to create a very large walk-in pantry. It's definitely the best thing we did to improve the house so far.
Update 3/26/10: I've had a few questions about the furniture. All the pieces in the house come from Ashley.

My husband and I created several large flower beds to compliment our small sloped front yard. We used all native Texas drought and heat tolerant plants--most of which are green all year round.

I wanted a clean uncluttered feel in my bedroom. The jumping off point was the rug that needed to stay in the room. Decided to go for a close color match on the walls. I found the antique dressers for a song at a used furniture store and gave them the black treatment. They were pretty beat up when I found them. Window treatments are from Target and shades are from Lowes. I used a silver leaf paint on the antique mirrors. They originally were a browny/gold. Bedding is from Target, TJMaxx, Home Goods and Martha Stewart. I made the bedskirt myself. Simple and spare. Just the way I like it.Paint color is Oatlands Subtle Taupe. I bought it at Lowe's. It has a lovely grayish hue to it.

Window panels & hardware that were on backorder finally arrived. They were installed over the weekend, along with delivering a $30 thrifted buffet I sanded, primed, painted and stained. The buffuet, set under the existing wall mounted tv, gave not only weight to this side of the space, but also adds concealed storage.
Although bookcases or etegers could have worked on the left and right wall, the person this space was designed for didn't want the "clutter" of books displayed. And I wasn't going to put bookcases just to fill them with store bought 'stuff'. She's in transition in her life, and is looking for a clean comfortable space.
This space is part of an "L" shaped open living room. Since I was keeping the sofa along the wall - to maintain the view to the patio - I needed to create a flexible seating area to bridge the sofa to the wall mounted TV. These four slipper chairs, set around another refinished thrifted find - a Drexel Heritage solid wood coffee table found for only $40 -did the trick. And even though these two thrifted pieces were found at two seperate shops, their lines and finish work together to give a cohesive look to the space, without breaking the budget. Her existing silver framed wall art is balanced on the opposite wall with a grid of four silver frames from Ikea. The mirrored [Beekman] sconces I found at ZGallerie and help give a reflective quality to this space. The only thing missing: two Spathiphyllum plants to place under the pictures which will give the space 'life'.

I am here in central Mexico in our living room and I was just looking at the DETAILS...the things that catch my eye, the pieces we have collected over time. I decided I would just shoot away and post a few of the small details. To me, these are the things that make our homes....our personal touch! Hope you enjoy the photos.Carole www.carolemeyerart.com
