  • Our $650 Kitchen Makeover, The hubs and I recently moved into a 175 year old house and couldn't wait to get our hands to work. First order of business was giving some attention to the kitchen which had recently (5 years?) been redone in a Tuscan type theme. While new appliances are on the agenda (read not in the current budget) and the dinosaur of a microwave will be replaced with an over-the-range one, we spent a total of $650 in here and did all of the work ourselves with the exception of the "soapstone" countertops which my brother who does millwork crafted for us. We are pretty pleased with the way it turned out., Kitchens Design

  • My Renovated Condo, I recently completed a total renovation of a 710 square foot, one bedroom, one bath unit in a 50-year-old condominium high-rise building in Dallas, Texas. The kitchen was all original with appliances and finishes from the mid-sixties. A ten-foot section of wall that separated the kitchen from the living room was removed to create an open concept. The ceiling in the new kitchen was also raised up one-foot to provide a continuous line at the ceiling from the living space. The kitchen is six-feet wide and fifteen feet long. The design is contemporary with custom Maple cabinetry in a dark brown stain; stainless steel appliances; stainless under mount sink and brushed satin nickel door pulls; Cambria "Torquay" quartz countertops; 4"x12" glass subway tile backsplash; Can ceiling lighting and under counter LED lighting; New 12" x 24" polished porcelain tile flooring is used throughout the unit and helps not only to unify the spaces but also visually enlarges all of them. The bathroom tub was removed and replaced with a glass enclosed shower. A new floating vanity with glass vessel sink and chrome faucet was installed. A medicine/storage cabinet was installed the full width of the wall in an 18" deep plumbing cavity so that the doors are flush with the wall and do not take up any space in the small bathroom. Renovation was accomplished in three months., Kitchens Design

  • Our $4.39 Mudroom Makeover, Since movinginto our new (old) home this summer, we've been hard at work making it our own, all on a budget. The entryway/mudroom had worn out, gray painted hardwood floors. I went out and bought a roll of blue painters tape, went down into the basement where the previous owners left gallons of floor paint (ugh) and got to work., Other Spaces Design

  • Vintage Farmhouse Bathroom with Modern Appeal, Prestine 1960's: that would be the description of this bathroom when I bought my farmhouse. Yellow toilet, sink and shower. Psychedelic flower themed wallpaper. Orange carpet. Yes, carpet in the bathroom, on top of which the toilet sat. Yuck. Hazmat suit for demo? Yes, please. We gutted this bathroom down to the floor joists. We ran new electrical and installed a bathroom fan. We moved the toilet to accommodate a claw foot tub. And we busted down a wall to install a neo-angle glass shower. This was the first full room I remodeled in my house and I chose to go with a very vintage feel. I choose traditional penny tiles for the flooring and pine edge and center bead for the walls and ceiling. I decided to install pedestal sinks with vintage-y chrome faucets. Even though, I don't have as much storage space as I did before with the clunky plywood cabinet, I don't mind. There is something a little gross about storing things long term in a bathroom, don't you think? I choose to tile the shower with white subway tiles and to accent it with a glass tile. The glass shower door and the glass tile add a modern touch to a very vintage bath. I replaced the 1960 brass door knob on the bathroom door with a cast iron and glass replica knob made by a company in NH that has been producing door knobs, shelving brackets and other miscellaneous hardware since the 1890's. I figured the original door knobs from this house that were lost many years ago may have come from this company. It feels a little more like restoration and less like rote remodeling when I can find something from the same period to put back into the house. It brings peace to a house that upon entering looks chaotic - decades of mismatched remodels that don't quiet flow with one another or the original character of the house itself. And in the end, that is my purpose with this house - to right the wrongs of the past and restore it to its original splendor., Bathrooms Design

  • Scarless Kitchen Facelift, We have been contemplating getting a new kitchen but do not feel the 6-7 grand we'd put into it would be worth it. I'll be done with nursing school in about 2.5 years and we plan to move around that time. So in order to make the space more enjoyable/tolerable I decided to take matters into my own hands!, Kitchens Design
