Our house needs a new look! What color should we paint the window trim, the decking, and handrail. The house needs some character with landscaping as well. Also looking for advise on decorating the deck with outdoor patio lights and furniture, ect. We feel that the house is too bland and it needs some character. We live in a house that is 1,600 sq. ft. on the main level, and 1,200 sq. ft. on the lower level. It has a light grey vinyl shake siding called "weathered white". The windows are trimmed out in cedar painted white. It has double hung white windows, and two white french doors facing the lake. The lakeside is considered the front. There is a front deck that wraps around to the back of the home and it is a grey Trex maintenance-free decking. The deck railing is cedar painted white with aluminum spindals. The gutter is 6 in., 1/2 round, galvalium. There is a detached garage with the same siding, trim, and gutter. There is no lanscaping to speak of. We are desparately needing advise on how to create a shabby chic look, that is fun, and inviting, but yet elegant.

Exterior of my first " Go Green " renovation. Craig's List, Ebay, Habitat for Humanities are a few of the places I purchased items from. The goal was to re-use building products and keep our costs low by searching and bartering through local souces. This is an investment rental property, purchased at the right price due to lack of care & maintenance. By finding those special deals we received quality items and cut our renovation costs by almost half. You might want to keep in mind, that I worked the site during the day and surfed Craig's list and watched TV at night. I spent quite a bit of time surfing and chasing after these items across two states, but ultimately I saved a lot. Thank You for taking the time to look at my projects.

I have only done small things to the front of my home but I really don't like it? Painted the deck (needs to be replaced. Thought of cutting down the shrubs and messy trees by the deck and adding a trellis over the deck? Does anyone have ideas of what I could do?

Exterior remodel, I repainted the house and rebuilt the decks and railings by myself. The decks are composite with copper railing and cedar posts. I had to hand cut the post/railing with a circular saw and drill the holes this not a pre built railing at all each hand rail was fitted to the the actual demention. I used plastic flashing to help drain water from the joists underneath (we live in a wet climate. A neighbor down my street liked it so much he copied my railing also.

This is our first house. We just closed and moved here Sept 11th from a 1,000 sq foot townhouse. We've tried to focus our little bit of improvement money on the areas inside that need it most. We have not done anything to the outside of the home, except I put some pumpkins on the front porch. Going to add a little more seasonal decorations next weekend.

These are pics of the outside of the house. We did alot of work on the front in the past 3 years. It looked so different when we bought it. The shutters were like a dark green, the landscaping was basic builder stuff. We also had a fence and a storage building put up.

This is my new house. I moved in in November so I still have quite a bit to do! I designed it myself...I really enjoy designing and building! It's the 2nd house that I have built.

Thank you all for your great ideas. After careful consideration, we have opted with Pre-colored cement board siding for lasting durability. We are in the midst of this exterior DIY project and it is taking some time. We are using many types of patterns and textures on the house to break up the monotony. I have one sneak peak picture and will post more as the project continues. Again, thank you for all your suggestions.
This is the exterior of our home. It sits on a corner lot. We need to re-side the 3 sides shown. Notice how everything runs horizontally, including the lap siding, and how one dimensional it looks. I don't want to see all those horizontal lines. I'd like to mix it up a bit, color-wise and siding materials used. Please help me think outside the box. Suggestions needed but keep in mind that we are diy-ers and we do have a budget. Also this is just suggestions for the homes exterior, not landscaping. That'll have to come later. Thank you in advance for all your creative suggestions.

When we first purchased our home, we knew we wanted to do something to bring out the style. Since we live in a private community, where almost all the homes look alike, we wanted ours to stand out. What do you think?

Front of our new house after painting the storm door, adding new door hardware and hanging a new light fixture. We plan on building custom window boxes for the lower windows in the spring. Possibly painting the concrete on the porch and steps?
