My husband and I will be retiring to a townhouse we purchased in Monterey, CA. The home has a fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay. The upstairs has a 2-piece bathroom, kitchen, and great room and the downstairs has 2 bedrooms, main bath, laundry area, and the master bedroom with en suite bathroom. My problem area is the great room upstairs. Currently it has a hodge podge of sofas, loveseats, art work, tables, and chairs. The only thing I like is the glass-top dining table ... the rest can go! I really want the great room to have different "areas" including a living/family room area and dining area. I want to redecorate/redesign the room to be in an elegant Monterey/Carmel style and for it to truly be a showplace. There is plenty of natural light that comes into the room from the bank of windows on the east wall of the great room. My favorite colors are creams, golds (I love bling!, blues, and greens. I am looking forward to your decorating ideas and suggestions for our great room!

I went with a beach coastal feel in my family room. Built in bookcases, DIY dogbed, black and white frames and beach accents give a layered feel to this room.

I changed the layout of the room based on advice from posters on the first version. It is much cozier than before. There is no foyer, so you walk straight into the living room. I originally set the furniture back to allow a walkway. This arrangement works better. Thanks.

A few updates...slowly getting there. : Thank you for all your previous comments, and feel free to leave more...
There is a small dining set and small buffet sideboard going behind the brown couch in the next month. The wicker chair and table behind the couch will be going back into the master bedroom.

This monochromatic great room, comprised of a bright kitchen and warm family room, is ideal for everyday living as well as entertaining. The wood detailing, including distressed planked flooring and beautiful finished carpentry, make this room a treat for the eyes.

My inspiration piece was a painting called "Sea Glass". Never a "blue" person before I fell in love with the teal color... Always on a tight budget I used items from my staging business and re-purposed some furniture using paint. Living by the beach I transitioned the room from Tuscan to Coastal Casual

***We are renting this home so painting and removing vertical blinds is not an option :( *** I had recently posted a photo of our living room and got great ideas...so I moved a couple of things around. I have began to transition from "country decor" to a more "eclectic decor" with a coastal feel. Because we live 1/4 mile from the the Monterey Bay CA...the view is amazing from the living room deck.

This is the living room in my southern costal home on the golf course and five minutes from the beach. It's been quite a work in progress. Any thoughts?

We have a big combined living, dining and kitchen that was really hard to decorate and paint. This is our third paint color on the walls - before it was a dark green which seemed to drab. I posted before and got LOTS of great ideas from his forum which I incorporated, please let me know what you think!

Two walls are red and two are the pale yellow that is throughout the rest of the house. I love how the seashell frames look on the red wall. The other side the room needs help.
