Well I designed this with the 2X3 piece of marble my customer gave me in Naperville IL. the modern flat black granite was not working in this traditional setting. Then the builder thought it would be ok to put a contrasting gold island top to set it all off.

Inspired by penny floors from "Living Off the Grid" on Facebook, this is my approximately 6000 pennies worth of kitchen backsplash I installed July 5-7, 2012.

I decided to redo my kitchen backsplash with patina copper. I originally had tile that came with the home but I wanted some more unique. I had seen some backsplashes done with copper tile but I wanted something with more color since my cabinets are so plain. I found some beautiful patina copper sheets online and decided to go with something "bold". I chose the Azul copper for a tropical look I wanted. Overall the project was fairly easy to do with simple cutting outlets in the copper and adhering copper sheets to the wall with construction adhesive.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you knocked down a wall that separates your family room from your kitchen? We did it and gained an open, more spacious, contemporary living/kitchen area. We're not all the way finished with the space, but check it out and let me know what you think so far.

Our reno consisted of a complete demo of the cabinets. We chose to go with Espresso finished cabinets from Kitchen Maid w/ undermount lighting. Tumbled tile backsplash w/ glass inserts and tumbled strip. New stainless appliances. Quartz coutertop. Brass light fixture has since been replaced with stainless steel 3 light. All we have left is to change the wall color. Not sure what color to go with...thinking of a light green, yellow or cream color.

We renovated the entire downstairs. We ripped out all the floors, installed beautiful hand scrapped bamboo throughout, put up crown molding, new lighting, new paint, entire new kitchen - black leather granite counters, installed chocolate maple cabinets, glass backsplash that pulls all the colors together, added black furniture island with madura gold granite, copper farmhouse sink, lights and furniture as well as taking down the knee wall and making it a breakfast bar, changed the stairways by adding wrought iron spindles and staining the banisters.

Here is what $1200 can do! ***Still a work in progress, but here's our story***
We remodeled two homes located over 200 miles apart at the time we started this kitchen remodel. BOTH were on a tight budget and with resale in mind, but we invested in some key elements. We transformed this builders' grade oak kitchen with standard vinyl flooring, into a vintage-inspired kitchen with a French twist.
Here are all of the elements:
* Cabinet refacing, using Rust-o-Leum Cabinet Transformations = $149.00
* Stenciled Backsplash, "Springtime in Paris" stencil from Royaldesignstudio.com = $100 stencil
* New Roman shade from SelectBlinds.com
* Drum light from Lumens.com by Elements, grasscloth $267
* Flooring from BestLaminate.net @ $1.99 sq. ft.
(In progress
* Butcher Block Island--IKEA butcher block in oak = $169 each.
We drove 150 miles each way for our butcher block, spliced them together + added a roomy 15" extension. (This added space for 3 more people! - a great entertainment addition!
* Corbels from Architectural Depot (supports for island = $74 ea x2
Some finishing touches are still being added, but we would love to know what you think!
