  • Classic Elegance DIY, Kitchen has been 2 years in the making, as many of you know. Finally, have most of the pieces together. Cabinets were painted white, then a stain put on them, then a glaze. The wall paint is Wilimington Tan, by Benjamin Moore. Draperies by JC Penny. Lighting for cabinets is halogen, up lighting is rope lighting. Am in love with this kitchen now! Hope you enjoy it too! Chandelier came from my DR and put in Kitchen and matched the hardware. (How lucky could I get) This was a DIY project, except for draperies.

How to Paint and Glaze Cabinets:

Cabinets were a muted green when I moved in. Scraped off the paint and found they were a pickled pink under the green, so roughed them up, painted them swiss coffee white. then used walnut stain from home depot, heavier in the lines and crevices. Next, used a glaze from Home Depot or Lowes. Waited three days between each process to make sure it was dry. If something gets on the cabinets, it just washes off like a table. Been great!, Kitchens Design

  • European cottage kitchen, I was blessed to have a patient and talented custom cabinet maker who is now a friend for life! Cabinets are a mixture of painted "Buttercream" and stained "Espresso" with lots of "furniture" features. The range hood and plate rack/buffet were made from inspiration pics I'd saved. I love my pull-out spice racks that are "hidden" in the legs on either side of the drawers below my cook-top, which are always a surprise when people see them the first time! I really love the double islands and use them both (especially the sinks!) and it's especially nice when family or guests volunteer to help! We have a coffee bar and desk area in the breakfast nook that we use a lot as well, especially during the winter months. Thanks for looking!, Kitchens Design

  • Painting/glazing the kitchen walls and cabinets - IN PROCESS, I started with white walls kind of dirty white cabinets. The walls are now gold and I have painted the lower cabinets the same gold but am going to add a dark glaze to them as i dislike the sold color look . I have brass pulls and don't like them but before I buy new I'll take a shot at spray painting them black. The counters are white tile - only 5" tile with lots of grout that is impossible to keep clean and I plan to replace them with very large tiles. , Kitchens Design

  • Help With Stark, White Painted Cabinets--what can I do to soften them and repair poor paint job?, This is was a foreclosure. Cabinets are in good shape, however the paint job is showing wear. What are my options to improve these cabinets? I know I could spent $30,000 and replace, but they are in good shape. I would also like to soften the color. The stark white seems to fight with the black counters and tan backsplash. I THINK I would like a less stark white (almond?) with darker colored corners--is that called a glaze? I'm pretty handy with a paint brush, but I need good instructions.

Should I remove the paint down to the wood?
(If so, how? what tools would I need? How long does this take?)

What color would you paint? Glaze? Stain?

Can I paint or stain or glaze over these cabinets?
(If so, what color? tools? where do i look for good instructions?)

Should I ditch the cabinet doors and buy new? (I don't want to go to this expense, but if there is too much labor involved with rehabbing the doors, it makes sense to buy new.) If I do this, how do I fix the backs and sides of the cabinets?

THANK YOU for you ideas!, Kitchens Design

  • brand new kitchen for $3000, This is our brand new kitchen. You have to see the old to appreciate the new. We only spent $3000 on the remodel (not including appliances). Our cabinets are pre fab from lowes with paint and hardware we spent $900 on them. I painted and glazed them myself and added ornamental wood pieces on the sink base and the 2 soffits. We scored Granite countertops with undermount sink for $1000 with the install. The faucet I got on ebay for $60 and we didthe backsplash for just under $100. Me and my husband did everything except installing the granite. It is our first home and we had a blast doing this together! Still not sold on the paint I like it, but I want to know what everyone thinks. Thanks, Kitchens Design
