  • Stranded on an Island, but we can see HGTV from here, HELP! , Our kitchen was been assembled from used cabinets and home made pieces over 7 years ago. My husband got us this far, then family deaths and my husband's heart attach brought things to a halt. Being self employed we have felt the crunch and now the island has just been too expensive to finish. It was made from plywood and some broken granite and marble laid about on the top. That was supposed to be just for a prototype. It has a nice KitchenAid gas cook top and a down-draft vent, that is not installed. We have been told that having one built could be $10 thousand dollars! The rest of the kitchen is nice enough although also un-finished. We have KitchenAid double oven sitting on a box, and a nice used Hotpont refridgerator and a Kenmore Elite dishwasher. The cabinets were purchased used from a design store when they moved. They have a great Tuscan style finish, although they didn't exactly fit and there is no trim. They have an upper and lower Lazy Susan and although there is an appliance garage, it has no door. The nicest feature is the recycling bins in the lower cabinets. The counter tops are plain white Wilsonart laminate with a back-splash. We wanted to do some sort of tile but now that is out also. We have a big space but need more counter top area.
The floor plan is large so there is room to change things a bit. The wall color is a terra cotta and use of " Bullnose" on all corners. This has been a DIY project with lots of scrounging and using used or slightly damaged appliances as we have little $ to work with. How can we finish this?, Kitchens Design

  • Crazy Container Garden, After our row of trees across the back fence died I was left with a big empty space to fill. This area of the yard is the view from our wall of windows in the back of the house. It needed something fast! Rather than start digging holes and planting shrubs I decided to do something a little more decorative something that is an extension of our indoor space. , Yards Design

  • Kitchen update, I had terra cotta walls but got tired of them plus my cabinets needed updating. I repainted them white painted my handles silver with appliance paint and finally got my stainless appliances. My husband put bead board about my island and I painted it to match the kitchen walls. The color I used is the middle color on the chart. It's a shade darker than my foyer and family room.My next purchase will be granite counters but that's going to have to wait 5 or 6 months. , Kitchens Design

  • I Just Wanted a New Counter Top!, I asked my carpenter BIL for new counter tops to which he replied "You can't put new counter tops on old cabinets. Then we needed to showcase the cabinets with new lighting and of course lights put in a different place need a new ceiling, then new paint, then new.....and on and on until the only original piece was the floor! My favorite is the writing on the soffett that says "Together, a great place to be" I love being " Together" in my new kitchen! , Kitchens Design

Please help by posting a color you think would look good. I have tried every site and just do not have the knowledge/creativity base to accomplish this task alone. Thank you!, Living Rooms Design

  • Total Kitchen Makeover -- Under $5000.00, We moved into a fixer-upper with a 1970's interior. Everything in the kitchen was dated and dirty! We were on a tight budget and didn't have much experience in remodeling but through a lot of internet study and a zillion trips to Lowes and Home Depot we were able to work our butts off and turn a 70's disaster into an old world traditional kitchen with a tuscan flair for under $5000.00. With the exception of the french door installation we did every bit of the work ourselves. , Kitchens Design

  • Updated British Colonial Pink-walled Living Room, The antique desk I inherited from my grandmother didn't mesh well with our contemporary style, so I put it in the living room as the focal point of an updated British Colonial design. We're not too sure about the wall color - we painted it to match the silhouette blinds and it came out pink. Repainting would be expensive since the ceilings are 18 ft and it's a living room dining room combo. We're also at a loss as to what to do with the arches in the California Mission style windows. , Living Rooms Design
