This is my favorite room to decorate. It's so small and cozy that a few little touches go a long way to define the style and create the mood. It's a simpler look than last year but much more practical. I have no fussy decorations to move when I want to serve a tasty breakfast or have a friend over for tea. Although a rug looks good, it's really not practical in this heavily used room and so it had to go. My theme this year is definitely PRETTY but PRACTICAL.

When we talk about blending home and garden this is a perfect example.
Drawing on California's Spanish Colonial architectural heritage, the garden works to enhance the architecture of the home. The plants, common to the Mediterranean, are both colorful and drought tolerant. The use of wrought iron is a tradition directly from the Old World. It is timeless, durable and looks like jewelry.
This is the Living / Greatroom of a Santa Fe style custom home I designed in Sedona, AZ for some dear friends. When you think of wall color many times people will go with the basic white because it is light and is easy to do. Well! take a look at this room done with yellow. I believe this shows that you can be creative with bright colors and still come out with a finish that is not too overbearing or distasteful. Note the large Flagstone Fireplace mantel pieces with the lichen growing on them, paired with the leather furniture native rugs and pottery and heart pine floors you get a lot of warmth and some rusticity without being too overly rustic. I myself was surprised with the end result, it truly worked out well I believe. What do you think?

Drawing on California's architectual historical ties to Spain and Mexico, best expressed in Santa Barbara, California, call it love or obsession, the Spanish Colonial Revival style was destined to captivate our dream of what could be.
This is the result of years of hard work, love and the determination to see our dream come to fruit. Learn more at www.casasmithdesigns.com

We love our Santa Fe style home's great room. It combines our foyer, kitchen, dining, living and den areas. It is very southwest with it's terracotta tile, kiva fireplace, vegas, and vega and pank 14' ceiling. We need help with window treatments.

Christmas at my home is full of decorations for my grandbabies. My living room is in gingerbread men. The foyer is decorated in Santa's. The tree in the foyer is mainly white with santa glass ornaments all through the tree. On the landing is a small tree loaded with handmade ornaments out of cloth and minature jingle bells. There are 2 Elfs that stand at the top looking down at Santa, Ms Santa, and Father Time. In my dining room I have the reason for the season...the manger is placed in the bay window with a glittering star hanging above. The tree is full of fruit and a gold star gracing the top...Above the table I have ribbons and sugar cookie angels hanging down, and in my china cabinet nook is a beautiful angel guarding over us all. In the breakfast room is 3 wood bark trees full of ornaments that I have collected over the years with my kids plus some ornaments on wood that I painted this year. Lastly in my bedroom, I went with a cabin feel having a large tree full of berries for the baby bears that are up in the top of the tree and Mommy bear looking up at them as she hangs from the bottom of the tree. I have feather trees and a woodland santa setting on my fireplace mantle to complete the look.

"It looks like one of those bathrooms you see in a fancy Spanish hotel" remarked the tile installer. "It's nice to see something different being done. Classy," he expressed with pride admiring his work and thank us for the chance to work with again.
Every year we have family and friends that like to come and see our Christmas decorations. These pictures are from our living room. These are just the highlights

We had an old-English themed Christmas this year in Faeryhollow. The English country/Victorian style that I favor really set the stage for our celebration. We had a rare white Christmas (think blizzard here in the mountains. We kept a roaring fire in our fireplace and enjoyed the aroma of a fresh Frazier fir and simmering wasail as we kept warm inside.

This kitchen is uniquely Californian with deep Spanish roots. Arches, iron, wood beams, wood floors, wood cabinet and rich yellow the color of warmth combine to make a vibrant and functional kitchen and adjacent family room.
