This is an outdoor room that my partner and I created together over the course of 4 weekends.

We reclaimed this area by putting in a new fence and bringing it up further on the side of the house. This carved out this 12 x 12 foot space. After living with the unfinished space through the winter, it was just begging for completion. We finally got off our tail and started work.

We first installed a retaining wall from the corner of the house to the fence to help level the space. With the help of a friend, we installed multi colored concrete pavers and included a small step area in a different color.

Next we filled in and leveled the area using soil from around the yard, and leveling gravel and sand. Then we installed wide 18x18" concrete pavers stained terra cotta and used small pebbles as grout.

To finish the space, we bought a corner epay wood bench with planters. Also two Adirondack chairs stained the same color as the fence help to furnish the space.

For lighting we installed a combination of low-voltage lighting. We combined two copper pendant path lights with LED spot lights under the corner bench. This lighting scheme gives a warm glow to the area without being too harsh and in your face.

As finishing touches I used some old throw pillows I had and added in some plants. For the bench planters we added a Japanese Magnolia, an oakleaf Hydrangea, and a gardenia.

We’ve recently had the house painted, so the pictures don’t show that. Also I’m hunting for some color coordinated fabric to make my own bench cushions and other cushions for the furniture. The next thing I plan to do is to add an out door curtain for the window to give it more of a roomy feel.
