  • 1915 Bungalow Renovation, Our home is located in the Five Points area of Raleigh, NC, and was built in 1915. The home was originally a 2 bedroom/1 bath home built over a full basement. We renovated the original part of the home and added a master bedroom with bath, family room, screened porch & deck. Instead of adding more basement space beneath the addition, we instead made that new space an oversized garage., Other Spaces Design

  • The Moveable Playhouse!, We are currently renting a house with a small backyard... I wanted to build a playhouse for my boys that could be completely taken apart and moved. I also wanted something that would 'attract' rather than 'detract' from our exterior space. I built it in the garage for two reasons... I knew it was going to be tricky working in the hot New Mexico sun and was worried about wood warping and second, it ensured that I would be able to take it apart. Amazingly, I only had to cut off one misplaced screw in order to drop the walls and move it out! The whole project took about two weeks working on a part time basis... now I've got a list of parents that would like me to help them build one for their kids in their backyards!, Other Spaces Design

  • Studio Apartment with Murphy Bed, My goal was to furnish a small living space that would serve all purposes without the need of moving furniture around to do so. A fully mirrored wall visually doubled the space. The Murphy bed is fully hidden within its cabinet. When closed the front is stainless steel with the look of a false drawer at the bottom. A scored line down the middle with cabinetry handles adds to the illusion., Other Spaces Design

  • Small Laundry Room gets BIG Makeover!, We are in the process of getting a new kitchen and replacing all of the flooring in the living areas in our home. We are putting in a pocket door into the laundry room (which is off of the kitchen) so we were going to have to repaint anyway, so we had a "while we are at it" moment. Those are the 5 most expensive and time consuming words any do-it-yourself-er can mutter! But I think the results were well worth it!!! , Other Spaces Design

  • RV Reno, My family purchased a 1995 bumper-pull travel trailer. My husband had trouble seeing past the 90s blue carpet, and blue and pink splattered wall paper and draperies. I looked at the travel trailer completely differently and immediately knew what I wanted the end result to be., Other Spaces Design

  • Game room, We are actually still working on finishing this room but to make myself feel better about how long it is taking us to finish it I am going ahead and posting it for viewing. This is new construction added to an old house so it was very important to me to have the new parts "feel" like they have been in existence for as long as the rest of the house has been. Keeping with the original house we used lots of wood ( but not so much orange colonial maple this time thankfully.....) This space is intended to be a masculine space designed for my husband and sons (the testosterone runs pretty high around here as the guys out number me). Anyway I'll post another space I designed as more female friendly in a minute or so. The floor is slate, framed in wood. What I learned from this floor project was that it's HARD to convince a contractor that you know what you want and how you want it done if you are a woman. Remodeling headache number 7,657,895.5 . Sometimes doing it yourself can be easier but we were intimidated to try to install this floor. In the end it wasn't as complicated as we imagined and we really could have/ should have done it ourselves.
The ceiling is pressed paper that was painted and stained. It was somewhat tedious and quite messy but I like the end result. My husband gets some kind of award for most trim used in a room. There are hundreds and hundreds of feet of trim on the ceiling alone...never mind the walls. Our friend Lupe works with us on a regular basis to get these projects of mine finished. A true friend indeed who is an occassional design mplementation mediator. What I like most about Lupe ( aside for his competent skill sets) is he never says, "it can't be done"... He and Craig have done some wonderful building from some admittedly sketchy drawings. I am VERY lucky to have such help in getting my ideas out of my head and into a room. , Other Spaces Design
