Instead of overhead lighting - much more flattering for a room you spend a lot of time in is at least one lamp sconce in each corner. A white sheer for the window may brighten up that area. Yes, definitely get a flat screen for the wall - it will free up floor space. (Not only in real space, but visually as well. Get two new upholstered LazyBoy chairs and a side table for a fresh look. Add a round print rug for under the entire seating area. Art has more impact if it is large and lower. Paint walls a mossy warm light to medium green or a caramel - include the doors for a seamless look. The bookshelf would benefit highly from some changes - several examples include putting books together according to color or, alternate horizontal and vertical book piles. Try not to put loose papers in bookshelves. It's so hard for that to ever look good. Alternate books with pretty boxes. Look for more ideas by putting book shelf in search box of HGTV.com. Beth, my thoughts are to loose the chair where the pooch is reclining & replace it w/a new doggie bed {takes up less space} LOL, Move the recliner to that spot. Would be great if you could get a new {smaller} recliner & perhaps move the large tan one elsewhere in your home. Loveseat for the wall space facing t.v. = seating for 3. Hanging t.v. on the wall would certainly give the floor space where it now sits more breathing room. Replace small lamp w/larger & taller lamp for reading. Larger art for above the "new sofa" Consider replacing tab curtins w/dark mahogony bamboo Roman Blinds that will be a sleeker profile & let in more light when open. Since light is limited, I suggest Glidden-WGYO9-Natural Straw, for wall color {light yellow, but doesn't look like lemons} It would bring sunshine to this nice space & compliment the brown tone of your bookcases. Also would work well w/your floor tone. Hope this helps.
