This room isn't ugly and has so much mid century modern potential! Great bones. Definitely paint the fireplace stones white. Google image white painted brick fireplaces to see the before and after. It will instantly brighten and make this room look chic. I would paint the pass through counter wood white also. Love the artwork above the fireplace. Next step is to declutter. You have too much chachy stuff, mostly all the framed pictures around. If you're lucky to have an IKEA, you can buy their floating shelves for $14.99 each and hang 3 of them. Transfer your pictures to like black frames and lean them on the floating shelves.

I would make a mantel that ties in with the shelves that are on the sides of the fire place. Then do a white wash on the stone to give it a fresh look. Slip cover the furniture and paint the walls. Put a mirror over the fire place flanked with candles
