I love that you have a painting that your grandmother made. I too have one I deeply treasure. Mine was on a bookshelf. Several friends pointed out that it just got lost in amongst all the books and other stuff. When I had the money I took it to an excellent frame shop who did an amazing job. It was a small painting until they got through with it. Now it has it's own space on a wall where it stands out. You may also want to consider this. You might even be able to hang it above the fireplace. Love your story and your room!!

lots going on in this room and lots of different period furniture; i think you should simplify the mantel, remove the TV and stick with fewer colors in the room. overall, it's pretty.

What a touching story! I love that you were able to salvage a really nice piece from your childhood home. I really agree with CJS_216. A fabulous piece of art over the fireplace would look really dramatic. The knicknacks on the fireplace, the branches on the wall, and mirrors are distracting. Removing them would help significantly.

For me, the fireplace focal point is distracted by all the stuff on the wall and the window treatments. The arched mirrors are too close to the fireplace and not centered to the furniture "under" them. The vertical branches in the vase compete/confuse with the horizontal branches painted on the wall. Personally, I would take all that down and focus on something smashing over the fireplace to really draw the eye to the fireplace that pays homage to your childhood home. JMHO.
