Thank you everyone for your quick and helpful responses!! I boxed up the rug to return and headed to Home Goods and JC Penny! A few pillows definitely helped and I will search for some curtains too. Unfortunately there is not much i can rearrange. The AC unit is on the window wall and the TV is on the opposite. The eye sore of a recliner has to stay too. Its the only thing my husband wants in here. I lost that battle a LONG time ago... trust me, ive tried getting rid of it! I will add an additional picture so you can see the layout a little better and will repost when im done. Thanks again everyone, I really needed your advice!

I have to agree that the rug is not necessary, and, it's small size chops up the space visually, making it look smaller than it is. Your art is fine. I would suggest getting or making some floor length drapes in purple and green, hung from above and to the sides of the window frame. Then, pick some pillows that work with the drapes and the art. I think you'll find that this finishes off your room nicely, with just drapes and pillows. Repost when you're ready.

I would return the rug. It's too small, too dark, and too solid in color. A patterned rug would help break up the sea of beige and give you colors to pull from for your accent colors. I would try one large art piece behind the sofa to fill more of the wall space. It would help to see the rest of the room. I'd try putting the sofa on another wall, such as the window wall if possible. It's too squished onto this one and there's no room for end tables/lamps. No matter where you put the sofa, the chair needs to be moved so it doesn't line up like this with the sofa. It should be at an "L" or angled into the room more. I think you could warm the space up and achieve the addition of color with some floor to ceiling drapery panels.You can leave the verticals since it's a rental but just leave them permanently stacked open. Be sure to get drapes that are lined with white or cream so they aren't offensive looking from the outside.You've got the basics, just need to tweak and rearrange.

The wall behind the sofa looks just fine, in fact I love those paintings. That's not the problem. The problem is the window - it desperately needs curtains. That's what is making the room feel so cold and naked. You really don't need the rug because the dark purple just blends into the dark wood of your furniture and you can't really see the coffee table then. Invest your money into the curtains. Even if you just purchase two panels and then put sheers in between them it would look better than nothing at all. Also, perhaps your furniture can't be arranged any other way, but the recliner really is out of place shoved right next to the sofa. A nice side table would look better there with a lamp on it to warm up that end rather than what appears to be a floor lamp behind the sofa. One other suggestion is to add more throw pillows in your accent colors and don't be afraid to mix patterns!
