Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have tossed all the greenery, This weekend everything comes down for a good cleaning and we'll see if anything goes back up. I may actually call in the cabinetmaker as suggested by Mik50 to see how much it would be to rework the moulding and extend the cabinets to the ceiling. The cost may be prohibitive, but we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

For me, I got those vine looking bunches ina beautiful greenish yellowish with a hint of purple colour, its gorgeous than just the basic greenery,it would also brighten up your cabinetry, i bought enough and laid them throughout my kitchen cabinets on top leaving the ends hanging just at the edge of the cabinets, i also got these grape lights and gently ran them through the bunches throughout, so at night i got a cosy lit kitchen cubbords that add warmth and coziness to the kitchen and the vines make the kitchen pop day or night, just thought ide share with you what i did to my cabinets on top, also on the door knobs, there are grapes in small vines that comes in green or purple, seeing your colours are dark, if you can source the green grapes, i too a bunch and wrapped them in those plastic wraps that comes with the garbage bags and attached them to the door knobs, it gives it a tuscan feel...i love my kitchen, its tiny but so gorgeous :. Hope yours work out eventually for you.

If your cabinetry is only a few years old, have the original cabinet maker build glass-fronted cabinets to go above each existing one in the same wood and color. Or just choose a few to go to the ceiling for a staggered cabinet look. Either way, the crown molding will need to be reworked, but it could be fabulous! Be sure to have lighting inside.

The suggestion to put lighting above your cabinets is the first thing you should do. Next is get rid of everything up there. Now, do you have a collection of any kind? Large colorful bowls? Copper pots and pans? Pewter tea kettles? Platters? See where I'm going with this? Use the top of your cabinets to display your collection - whatever it is - and nothing more. I have a collection of antique copper molds and I have them hanging on the wall above my cabinets with hidden lights up there. If you don't have a specific collection, start one. Check out thrift stores or discount stores to find multiples of something you like - large pottery bowls in varying colors (for example. Have fun and make it YOU!

I read all your comments and as was expected, most people said remove everything. I am one for change so sometimes I do just that and other times I add seasonal things. As for yours, you really have a lot of counter tops. I'd suggest you make 2 or three groupings. Something in the corner, maybe over the cut-out and maybe on the ends. Your big pots and baskets and plates are great. I don't have a problem with artificial plants, just not so many.

I have a rooster themed kitchen. I bought a lot of pewter with red trim and put roosters and all along the top of my cabinets. If find it makes my ceiling look taller.

Sick of it = get rid of it. You have a lot going on on top of the counters and hutch. There is nothing wrong in having a clean and clutter-less above the cabinet area. Also, fake plants, anywhere, do not look very well.

I would get rid of the greenery and keep adding to ur collection of neat decor. You have a gret start.

One suggestion, aside from whatever you decide to put up there is to line the front inside of the top with rope lighting so that it lights it up. Your things are pretty but it is very dark...
