You mentioned "My old kitchen" so does that mean you have a remodel in the plans? I would leave the subway tile. Easy to clean, never needs paint, although you can paint it. Paint the cabinets black or a color and add new pulls. Take down the drop ceiling, first thing, and wallboard it and paint. As for your washer,dryer area, Finish it off with folding door or curtain. I take it that the refrigerator is to wide for the original space, so buy a cabinet, to paint, and place it there for storage, like your brooms or even as a pantry. Is there a need for two trashcans?? Your door is covered with mesh to keep out the flies and bugs, so buy a screen / storm door. Add a colorful rug on the floor. It isn't a bad kitchen, but needs some color and care. Have fun with whatever you decide.

I forgot to add -- deal with the cause of the stains in your ceiling, then replace the stained panels.

Some possibilites could include: switch out the tab top curtains for a roman shade or a bamboo shade; put a moveable island cart next to the stove; remove the mesh from over the door to your deck; hang a roman shade or bamboo shade in the doorway of your laundry; remove the tiles [which are regular, not subway -- they're rectangular] under the cabinets and replace with something else for a backsplash; and check out budget kitchen makeovers on this site for inspiration.

Do you have a budget for renovations? At a minimum, I'd suggest removing all the wall tile, keeping just the backsplash tiles. Patch the walls where needed. Remove the dropped ceiling and replace with drywall. Keep the cabinets, countertops and flooring. Paint the cabinets crisp white and the walls a soft contrasting color -- perhaps light taupe, gray, or silver-sage. Replace the refrigerator to its original spot by the stove or add a cabinet and countertop there. Remove the garbage can. These are not terribly expensive fix-ups -- mostly paint and elbow grease.
