  • Kitchen table makeover, what to do??, Have a mission style table which is darker than chairs I just purchased used. I'd like to makeover and am really struggling.I like rustic, and transitional. So what would make his table and chair set look awesome? I know chairs are hard to refinish so was hoping to just distress them? No stripping, and redo table. any advice PLEASE THANK YOU, Kitchens Design

  • My Kitchen Vision Came To Ife, Before: the kitchen had white counter with a raised bar. The cabinets were white, sink white, backsplash off white, black dbl oven that cooked to the crisp, black glass top stove, 16 year old wallpaper, brass knobs and a hug box on the ceiling for fluorescent lighting.

Our floors are wood so we did not want to move cabinetry and have to redo the floors that flow throughout the house.

We wanted to open the kitchen up to the breakfast table and den so we removed the raised bar and the huge box on the ceiling. It may sound like a minor divider but removing them really opened everything up.

We painted the walls SW Diverse Beige, "so long wallpaper!!". The cabinets got a fresh coat of white paint and simple black pulls. The island is small and deserved a little color so it is now dark blue.
Counters- goodbye white counters, hello beautiful, shiny black granite that topped the fresh white cabinets and black pulls! It is not raised and gives a huge bar with plenty of space to eat, roll out cookie or bread dough, you name it. The undercounted, stainless steel sink and large chrome faucet just add to the shine!

Back to the small island, now dark blue, was relieved of what little white counter it had and the black glass cooktop and was topped with a gray/white , somewhat exotic granite and a Jen-Air gas cooktop ( love it!). The island is very small and by the time you have pots with handles, you don't have much space for spices, hot pads, or even a hot cookie sheet. We also noticed we could no longer put groceries on the gas stove or make a sandwich like we could on the glass top. I found an answer for that! Personalized cutting boards!

Why Not Stand Out does enlays of quotes, names, photos, recipes, scripture, anything you want on cutting boards of all sizes! I got one to place on the grates when not cooking. Grocery and sandwich problem solved! I bought a second and mounted it on the side, right below the new granite and it folds up and down for extra space when need! I absolutely love it! When not lifted up, it hangs on the side, wood against dark blue and personalized! I highly recommend this on the side of any cabinet, island, wall or any place you need extra counter space. Kitchen, bathroom, next to bed, craft room, anywhere!

The cutting boards can also be used for trivets. You don't want to turn your burners on of course but placing a hot pan of muffins on it. Or cutting cheese on it will be great too!

We put in stainless appliances, a beverage center, coffee center, microwave and television. Can lights, clear pendant lights. Our backsplash is white subway whith a mosaic with white, gray stone and a metal. I have pulled the blue out of the gray. And wanted a pop of color so I chose lime green.

I will attach pics of before and after, I still need relaxed Roman Shades in the breakfast nook but you can see what we have done. I also took the time to organize! I put coffee cups in the drawer below coffee center and everything just sparkles!, Kitchens Design

  • From 1980's Country Nightmare to Rustic Industrial Dream, This was my 1890's farmhouse kitchen in the Stix... that last saw a makeover in 1985. We're talking blue laminate countertops, bargain basement laminate flooring, white aging appliances, and a blindingly boring white tile backsplash. As part of a six week overhaul on my 3000 sq foot farmhouse, we gutted the kitchen - except for the cabinets with handmade inset doors that were lovingly built into place by one of the owners many decades ago. The cabinets were painted Chelsea Grey and upgraded with black iron hardware. We opened the doorway to the dining room and moved the fridge to an underused wall on the other side of the kitchen. We laid hand scrapped hickory floors in various widths to keep the colonial farmhouse feel. I chose a level 2 granite countertop in Nero Wave - a beautiful black granite with white veining. We used reclaimed barn board from the local lumberyard to create a custom backsplash to balance out the modern elements that were used in the kitchen. And what's a farmhouse kitchen without a big, deep apron front sink? The 30" sink and an oil-rubbed bronze faucet in a vintage design are at the heart of the kitchen. But the cherry on top? That's the custom-built barn door that replaced the old blue interior door that linked the mudroom to the kitchen. It was built with reclaimed hemlock siding from an old Pennsylvania corn silo. Someone had it planed down for flooring but returned it to the lumberyard because it was "too" rustic. Boy, I'm sure glad they did, because it made a lovely barn door that keeps the chill off from the uninsulated mudroom and fills the empty space next to the fridge. With rolling barn door tracks, it exudes the kind of beauty in function that is the epitome of our design., Kitchens Design

  • Our $650 Kitchen Makeover, The hubs and I recently moved into a 175 year old house and couldn't wait to get our hands to work. First order of business was giving some attention to the kitchen which had recently (5 years?) been redone in a Tuscan type theme. While new appliances are on the agenda (read not in the current budget) and the dinosaur of a microwave will be replaced with an over-the-range one, we spent a total of $650 in here and did all of the work ourselves with the exception of the "soapstone" countertops which my brother who does millwork crafted for us. We are pretty pleased with the way it turned out., Kitchens Design
