Having so much fun with all your comments on my other room thought I would post my kitchen. Nothing special but a few unique ideas that may help others.

I’ve been asked to share how I painted and glazed my oak cabinets. I'm not a professional, and learned a lot watching HGTV and on RMS. This is a process anyone should be able to tackle.

Just finished renovating the kitchen in my 1946 Florida cottage. By taking down the wall between the original kitchen and dining room the kitchen functions so much better. Plus it feels like I added square footage to the house. Yet I tried to design the new kitchen in keeping with the vintage 40's house.

A remodeled 80's kitchen. We replaced the window, made much larger to enjoy the view, replaced old floor tile with cypress flooring and removed a couple of walls to make area larger. The old cabinets were replaced, new appliances and new lighting. The island is two old Eastern Airline ticket booths and the top of an old drafting table, the island is not completely finished. The walls are bead-board painted with black milk paint. The ceiling is covered with recycled cedar paneling from downstairs. The design was done by myself, no fancy designers... hope I made no serious mistakes!! Let me know what ya think.

We recently gutted our 1971 galley style kitchen to the studs. We removed the wall separating the kitchen and living room. We wanted an open and inviting space to entertain. We replaced the builder cabinets with new maple cabinets. Added a bar with storage and seating for more function. Desk area for the computer and bill paying. We had a tight budget to work with so we splurged on the floors and went with granite tiles for the counter tops. We love the way it turned out. We did all the work but the electrical. What a great bonding experience! LOL.

A mixture of modern, farmhouse, and craftsman. Espresso glazed island with large newel posts that are an exact match to that of the staircase newel posts. Espresso stained 6 inch white oak floors, real lead glass upper cabinets with hand made glass from France, Hubbardton Forge handcrafted light fixtures. 10 foot ceilings. Antique white window trim with crown molding. Antique glass bottles in window transoms were found during the excavation of this house.

This little plain space was adequate but just needed some personality. First we took down this confining wall then changed out the tile to wood floors like the adjoining rooms. Then I distressed and painted the cabinets - creamy above and black below. I also eliminated the soffit and added custom tiny cabinets with mirrored mullioned doors above the upper ones to give height. OH - took out the ugly light and added a lantern above the sink. I removed the slide in range and replaced it with a heavy duty drawer bank with a gas cook top too. The oven, extra storage and a pantry is in the opened up space. After adding under counter lights and mirrored back splashes (SO inexpensive it just popped! The laminate counter tops were replaced with real pine tongue & groove. Which I have had in several homes and never had a problem with... New knobs, appliances, OH and a new bay window at the sink and I have an awesome kitchen!

I wanted to maintain the integrity of the soon to be 100 year old house. By this I mean I wanted to keep and add some of the architectural elements of the the home. Crown moulding, carvings and corbels. I did not want a hulking piece of stainless steel for a fridge so I had custom panels made to cover it. But I also wanted to give some it unexpected pop with the modern chandelier, small recessed halogen lighting, the large piece of granite behind the stove and just a touch of stainless steel.

My hubby "LOVES" to cook! (thank God so when we build our home 5 years ago he insisted on a professional kitchen. We have all professional appliances and I designed the unique cut out in the ceiling to mirror the island/bar.

Our original kitchen was built in the late 80's and designed with a "U" work space. It included layers of floral wall paper and boarders, soffits, tile counters and backsplash, linoleum flooring, oak stained cabinets (but no corner storage, minimal counter space, mini roll-top desk and a formal eating area.
The demolition began with replacing the windows, making them the same height and updating the trim around them. We removed the formal eating area to include a 6 foot center island to better account for our busy lifestyle. We replaced the tripping hazard between the differing heights of the terra-cotta floor in the entry way and the linoleum floor in the kitchen with 5" brazilian cherry planks. We removed the built-in desk and added a pantry. We loaded the kitchen with plenty of drawer and cabinet space, but only replaced the stove as it was only half working previously. Yes, it's an Electrolux and I highly recommend it! (We were on a budget, so the other appliances will be replaced eventually. Since the stove was placed on the wall of our utility room, I decided to add a pot filler since the plumbing was already in place. I only had 65 feet of counter space in the old kitchen and now have 112 feet of beautiful granite. For those of you who were asking the wall color is BM #HC-23 Yorkshire Tan.
As I was the contractor during the project we finished the entire kitchen-demo through installation in 3-1/2 weeks. (except for the trim which was ordered incorrectly, minor considering the scope of the project.
It's so great to have the storage and counter space necessary for our family. We love it.

We decided to take the plunge and go from one extreme to the other. We changed our birch cabinets to distressed black countertop from white tile to sandy colored quartz white tile backsplash to 1"x3" tiles white appliances to stainless and blue walls to brick red.
