Our 1920 house had the original kitchen and an under-used addition, which some call a three season porch, adjacent to it. We began the renovation by replacing the old jalousies with energy efficient windows and door. To help blend the two rooms, our contractor removed as much of the shared wall as possible. The original plan was to take down the entire wall; however, our plan had to be revised when we discovered plumbing inside that wall. Our contractor helped us contain the cost by custom building more kitchen cabinets to match the existing ones. This also gave me lots of additional storage - who doesn't love that! Bead board was installed along the breakfast room wall and at the ends of the cabinets. We had a local artisan make the wrought iron towel bar/pot rack. Recessed lighting was installed in both rooms along with honed "Jerusalem Gold" limestone countertops and "Saltillo" terracotta tiles (set on the diagonal. We visually joined the two spaces by using the same materials and colors throughout. It was a challenge to put a "new" kitchen into an old home. We wanted it to look as if this renovated kitchen was original to the house. Having our contractor custom build more of the old style cabinets helped retain that look. My husband and I have traveled to Tuscany together and were inspired by the earthy colors and rustic textures of that landscape. We kept this in mind when we were making the design choices as we renovated this space. In conclusion, we are pleased with the result.

Here's an updated version of my kitchen. I went ahead and added the sconces on the pendants... I found them for 10 bucks a piece! My kitchen itself is small however it's completely open to the living room/dining room so it makes it feel a lot larger and brighter. Plus it's also great for entertaining! Because the living room/dining room are so light and bright the darkness of the kitchen contrasts very nicely.

We built what was supposed to be our "dream house" in 2006-07, but I was designing the kitchen in my mind for years before that. I won't go into the gory details, but suffice to say we had a LOT of problems, many still outstanding, and it's likely the house may never be worth what we ended up paying for it, thanks to a crooked/incompetent contractor and other woes.
On the bright side, though it's not perfect, it's still pretty comfy, especially if you don't look too closely, and it's a lot nicer than any house I ever thought I'd live in, even in my wildest imagination. It wasn't that long ago that I was making Thanksgiving dinner for 12 in a tiny apartment with a 20-year-old coil top stove and 3 sq. inches of counter space, so I do know how very, very lucky I am.
I did all the design, from basic floor plan to decorating, myself, so blame me if you hate it. And, no, not everything is exactly as I'd like it, but the money tree didn't take root, so I work with what I have, including a lot of flat pack furniture. I was inspired by, among other things, the Hampton's beach house in the movie Something's Gotta Give, even though we're nowhere near the water, unfortunately. I guess I'd call my overall "look" cottage beach house via Pottery Barn.
To answer the most frequently asked question ... I'm an avid cook and baker and often feed a crowd so, yes, I really do use all those ovens. There are five, in case you're counting: two electric, one gas, a convection/steam oven and an Advantium.
Thanks to all who have taken the time to share comments, and a special thank you for all those folks who shared their own kitchen pictures, many of which inspired me. I am just trying to return the favor.

As promised....I am starting to post photos of the interior of our house. Just as the rest of the house....we gutted the kitchen and started over. We added all new cabinets, added granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, added a pantry, added hardwood floors, new windows, added a mudroom, etc...

I asked my carpenter BIL for new counter tops to which he replied "You can't put new counter tops on old cabinets. Then we needed to showcase the cabinets with new lighting and of course lights put in a different place need a new ceiling, then new paint, then new.....and on and on until the only original piece was the floor! My favorite is the writing on the soffett that says "Together, a great place to be" I love being " Together" in my new kitchen!

My brother, sister and I redid my kitchen. The cupboards were painted and two reed glass inserts were added as well as a market type coffee center. A new sink and faucet, black trim around the backsplash, lighting, recovered barstools and a few new accents helped the kitchen fit in better with the dining area and great room.

I just want to first start off that my kitchen is not a $100000 kitchen. We are still working on getting it how we want it. We are about to add a backsplash and would love new countertops.....but the kitchen is only 2 years old. The countertops are serving their purpose. Let me know what you think! http://kelmayrn.blogspot.com/~The floors are stained concrete.
