I hate to be a spoilsport but I strongly disagree with the other posters. You have very interesting cabinetry and the smart solution is to restore them. Strip off the old paint and refinish them to the way they looked when the house was new. The cabinet hardware looks like someones idea of modernising --eww. You can find reproduction hardware that will suit the style of the house. If you "update" this gem someone years from now will just have to rip out the modern junk you install. Peeling up multiple layers of linolium is an icky job but you'll be happy if you do it. I painted (deck paint, 3 coats my origonal pine floors and they look great! It looks like you have a dropped ceiling (or a glue on tile ceiling I'd remove that to get back to the origional. Restoration of a vintage home beats remodel anytime & increases value too!!

Pain them all a soft white, including the ceiling, put on new handles (maybe in a brushed bronze, and spray paint the hinges the same color, then tear off the vinyl backsplash and install an extremely user friendly and inexpensive aluminum tin backsplash (can be purchased at any home store approx. $17 for a 24x18sheet. Then get a nice updated light, add a printed valance to your window (a tight flat one, nothing fluffy and your all set! A beautiful paint color on your walls would be Sherwin Williams Oyster Bay or Sea Salt. Have fun!

I have an old farmhouse. It was very outdated. I built all new cabinet doors myself ,(simple shaker style and painted them an off-white then antiqued them. Also, I removed the drop cieling and which are nine. I also installed new countrtops and tiled a backsplash. I then, with some of the old doors, built myself a plate rack cabinet because I needed more storage. Then I built a simple center island with a buthcherblock top and put it on wheels. If you have room this adds alot of storage and also seating with barstools if you don't want a table. I don't have any special knowlege of carpentry or anything, you just have to be creative .Oh, and I added new knobs and drawer pulls. they reallyadded alot to the charm.

On a tight budget I would paint them all one color, either a white or off white. If you have paneling on the walls I would paint that as well, the color of the rest of the walls. I would probably go with a neutral wall color but that is personal taste. Update your light fixture, some can be found fairly inexpensively. Perhaps you can find or build some more cabinets with a vintage look for other walls. Check out www.freecycle.com it costs nothing to join, all items listed are free and you can list looking for a specific item as well. As people do remodels they often get rid of items that may just be what you need. If you really don't need the uppers, you could insert glass in them and use them for display. It doesn't sound like you can afford to loose the storage to me though. How old is your house? Do you know what is under the vinyl? Good luck.

My sister has an old farmhouse with an old, outdated kitchen. She painted her cabinets an off-white shade and antiqued them. She also cut out the inside panel of a few of the cabinets and added glass to them. She did all of this herself with very little cost. It looks wonderful. You could lay wood laminate floors over the vinyl if it is level.

ooo...you have a challange. First I would remove the doors on the cabinets. Leave the top row open. I know, no storage but you probably don't use those so much because they are so high anyway. Paint the cabinets white and put decorative kitchen items you use in there such as extra goblets, pitchers, platters etc. Arrange it so it's astetically pleasing. The lower 4 would have the doors but white also. New pulls would be great on those and since you don't have so many cabs. you can spring for some extra nice ones. The tile looks blue around the window and white on the bottom. I would get a cute toile valance in blue and white for the window. Can't see the countertops or floors but you mention paneling...I would either take it down or paint a whitewash over it. As for more storage you could since it's a large room get some bookcases at the office store or walmart and paint them white..then put a cute curtain over the front of the toile to match the window treatment.

you need to ise your space wisley. knock down the cabints, and extend your cabintry to a fouler more modern look, whith stainless steel, nice lightng, ritch wood and great ti8le floor, unless you have tile now, then you can put wood. get nice wide counter.
