Thanks for your great thoughts and quick response. My compliments on your talent are genuine! I admire all of the rooms you have posted, as they reflect my style in what I am aspiring to achieve in my next home. What I love about your rooms is that they feel like they will be timeless, so I had to turn to you for this advice! You have totally helped me decide, I am going to go with sconces, and I was planning on dimmers if I did them. Now it is all a "go". I will be sure to check out the site you suggested...thanks so much for that also. I think the room will be pretty, my table and hand carved french chairs are solid North American Black Cherry wood from the Robert Bergelin Company in North Carolina. I love it because it doesn't look too formal. Thanks again for your thoughts, and the site. Now, if only I could take you with me to choose the fabric for window treatments!

Well, first of all thank you for holding my opinion in such high regard! It's a big compliment. I am a big fan of sconces. I think that in the right space, they can be classic and timeless. I think a perfect wall for sconces is when they flank a piece of furniture (like you are considering, bed or another significant feature. Sconces can give you that finishing touch that really makes a room look complete. And, really create a different mood that is perfect for a dining room, especially when there are dimmers! I think I saw the buffet you are talking about (very nice! and I think it does not have a hutch, correct? In that case I would include a nice piece of artwork (not too small above it and make sure that the sconces are not too close together for the wall. Choose a simple sconce - so that they remain classic. Check out Uttermost.com - love their stuff. Let me know if I can help any further!

I know you are so busy with the little ones...only if you have time, I would appreciate you answering a question for me. We just met with the electrician for the new home we are building. I am stuck as to whether to do sconces in the dining room on each side of our buffet with mirror on top. It is a cherry Ethan Allen Buffet with a dark granite top we had made for it. It is in the British Classics Collection, quite casual, and I wonder whether to do sconces? I think in a way, the added lighting is nice, and then I think how dated lighting gets in a couple of years. Would you do sconces in a dining room?
