Our old kitchen lacked counterspace and was difficult to work in. Yes, we did the kitchen for under 20k. We were able to keep the price low by buying wall oven, dishwasher, range hood on Craig's list (yes, really). A lot of sweat equity, and an amazing carpenter with great hourly rates. I also cut costs by staining my own trim etc.... we were on a serious budget, but I was unwilling to compromise quality. The end result took many, many hours of our time bargain shopping, contracting and sweat equity. Still undecided on a backsplash, but that is coming as soon as we make a decision (more sweat equity on installation).
