Thanks for the comments. This basement had vinyl tile secured to the floor with industrial glue with carpet on top. The carpet was easy to remove. The tile and glue took the better part of a week to lift. A professional was able then to machine polish the concrete and then apply the stain. The result is great. It is durable, easy to clean and has character. It actually does not get too cold in the winter. The cost was about the same as tile.
