  • Rural Medical Clinic Renovation, Triana, Alabama, a small disadvantaged town located on the Tennessee River. In 1981 some of its residents had some of the highest levels of DDT due to contaminated fish eaten from the river.
Nestled in these foothills sits a native sand-stone building built in 1938 by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). When no longer used by the Government, the building became a rural clinic for the community. Over many years of of non-use, the building has deteriorated due to the elements. Betty Williams formed the Triana Historical Society to save this building. As a result, two grants were written which paid for a new roof that literally saved the building. Because of the building's historical significance, Betty has placed the building on the National Register of Landmarks. She has also started a yearly walk-A-thon for health and environment awareness.
Today she is seeking emergency grants to reframe the building inside which has been caused by a structural defect. Once restored, the building will become a community center for health fairs and lectures bringing awareness to cancer, obesity and diabetes.

Betty is making a BIG difference in a SMALL community, Other Spaces Design
